Participation in the seminar “The Lausanne Treaty as a teaching and learning object”

On Saturday 23 November, Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna participated in the conference-seminar entitled “The Lausanne Treaty as a teaching and learning object”, which was realized in Panteion University. The teacher in charge of this activity is Ms. Dimitra Gkortzali (Historian-Greek teacher in our school), who teaches the subject of History in classes A2 and A3. The group of A’ Class students consisted of Fotios Kaskanis (Α3), Ilias Merdis (Α2), Stavros Mertoglou (Α2), Ioannis Skarvelis (Α3), Emmanouil Sfakianakis (Α3), Konstantinos Repasos (Α3) and Sofia Farmaki (Α2).

Students of all the schools that participated attended the organisers’ salutations: Club for History Education in Greece (Ioanna Dekatri, Greek teacher), The Lausanne Project (Georgios Giannakopoulos, Lecturer, University of London) as well as the “Introduction to the problematics of the seminar” (Angelos Palikidis, Substitute Professor, Democritus University of Thrace).

More specifically, the students deepened their knowledge in the Treaty of Lausanne, which was signed on the 24th July 1923, while participating in team activities. They were divided in teams and they were assigned activities. Our students practiced the active, inquiry-based learning through the study of historic sources that were, among others, the testimonies of refugees from Asia Minor about their arrival in Greece. Moreover, the students participated in role plays, created written and oral historic speech, presenting their works on behalf of their teams and were applauded by the plenary. Then, the seminar was rounded up and the completion of the feedback questionnaire followed.
