The origins of the Evangeliki School of Smyrna date back to 1717, during the tenure of Metropolitan Ananias of Smyrna, while its formal establishment took place in 1733 with the signing of its founding act by prominent notables of Smyrna.

From its earliest years, it emerged as a leading intellectual center in Asia Minor, fostering classical education, the natural sciences, and the values of responsibility and service. In 1808, the name “Evangeliki School” was officially established, and it became enduringly associated with academic excellence and profound intellectual cultivation. The School possessed a remarkable library, rare manuscripts, and significant scientific collections, making it one of the most important educational institutions of Hellenism. The destruction of Smyrna in 1922 violently interrupted its operation in its historic seat. Nevertheless, its spirit, values, and educational legacy were carried over to its new homeland.

In 1934, the Evangeliki School was re-established in Nea Smyrni, continuing its educational mission without interruption. In 1971, it was officially designated as a Model School, in recognition of its historic course and the quality of the education it provides.

Today, the Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna operates as a public secondary education institution, in accordance with the legal framework governing Model Schools (Law 4692/2020). Its mission is to cultivate and disseminate the principles and practices of excellence throughout the educational system.

Within this framework, it develops innovative initiatives aimed at students’ self-improvement and educational excellence, while also identifying and encouraging students with exceptional learning abilities and talents. Pilot curricula, contemporary teaching methods, and innovative instructional practices are implemented, making use of new educational materials.

At the same time, research in didactics and psycho-pedagogy is promoted in cooperation with Higher Education Institutions and the Institute of Educational Policy. Clubs of excellence, creativity, and innovation are established, and training initiatives are developed with the aim of disseminating good practices throughout the wider school network. At the same time, support is provided for the pilot implementation of procedures for evaluating the quality of educational work.

With respect for its historical heritage and with a clear orientation toward contemporary educational realities, it continues to fulfill its mission in accordance with the legal framework governing Model Schools.
