Within the framework of the European Erasmus+ Project 2024-1-EL01-KA121-SCH-000228006 of the Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna, the Mathematician and Deputy Director of our School, Dr. Argyri Panagiota, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, carried out model teaching with the implementation of the interdisciplinary teaching scenario entitled “Statistical Analysis and Active Participation of Youth in Democracy”.

The purpose of the teaching scenario was for students to develop statistical analysis and data interpretation skills, using mathematics tools to study and understand the importance of the active participation of young people in democratic life. The combination of Mathematics with a contemporary social issue strengthens both their critical thinking and their awareness of the role of citizenship in a democratic society.

The method of implementing the interdisciplinary was peer student guidance, where students from the 3rd grade of the Humanities department took on an active mentoring role to guide and support students from the B2 grade in the Statistics teaching unit. Through this methodological approach, the students’ cooperative learning, responsibility, communication skills and social awareness were strengthened.

The teaching scenario fully supports the objectives promoted by the European project:

  • Strengthening the political participation of young people: Through the study of data, students understand the importance of voting and other forms of participation.
  • Cultivating critical thinking about democratic rights: Students reflect on the reasons for abstention and participation in elections.
  • Developing an active and responsible citizen: Data processing leads students to realize their own role in a democratic society.

The implementation of the model teaching was also attended by the Education Counselors of Mathematics, Mrs. Kokkaliari Magdalini and Mrs. Kalogeria Elisavet, and fellow school teachers, who completed an observation questionnaire at the end of the lesson. After the teaching completion, a session of feedback provision and exchange of views took place.
