Congratulations to our student Emmanouil Dimitrios, who won the bronze medal in the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad 2020 (ΙΜΟ 2020) and to his teachers who have taught him both in class and in the Mathematics Club, where they train students and make them love mathematics.
In the framework of the SMART-MT project funded by the Erasmus+ project of the European Union, you can watch this video on the “Mathematical modelling on the paradox of the stairs’ downfall” created by the mathematician and our school Vice Headmaster Mr. Sotirios Chasapis and it is based on a co-teaching session with our school Headmaster Dr. Christos Fanidis. Co-teaching on this specific problem was realised with a C’ Class group. The promotion of collaboration between teachers in real classes’ teaching, aiming at the multi-lateral processing of a problem, and the development of collaborative bonds that will constitute example for the pupils, too, are within the priorities of Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna.
The SMART-MT project contributes to the achievement of “Europe 2020” strategy objectives: reduction of the number of people with low performance in the sectors of reading, science and mathematics up to 15% and implementation of the “Smart development: development of an economy based on knowledge and innovation” priority. Furthermore, one of its aims is to develop the Digital Educational Culture of the Teacher-Mathematicians so as to boost the pupils’ participation and success.
The online educational journal “Neos Paidagogos” (ISSN: 2241-6781), in its 19th special issue (July 2020) entitled 2020-Year dedicated to Greek schools with history and tradition, hosts the article (pp.18-27) entitled “Evangeliki School of Smyrna in space and time” by Georgios Thodis, Eirini Arnaouti and Christos Fanidis.

During the school year 2019-20, Nea Smyrni Cultural Centre organised the student competition “Asia Minor, Ave!” for students of the Greek primary and secondary education on scholastic and artistic subjects related to the Greeks of Asia Minor.
Among others, students were asked to search for a story or narration referring to Asia Minor. Then, working in groups on the level of school class or school teams and given their familiarization with technology, they were asked to digitalize and process the material evidence (photographs, objects, interviews etc.) and register, under the supervision of their teachers, their story in the form of a short history documentary (10’).
A three-member team of our school consisting of the students Zioga Vasiliki-Christina, Zora Georgia-Theodora from B’ class and Panagaki Chionia from C’ Class, under the supervision of their teachers Mr. Thodis Georgios and Mrs. Arnaouti Eirini created the short documentary “Remembrance” («Μνημοσύνη»).
The documentary, which is uploaded here, won the 1st prize in the competition.
During the school year 2019-2020, Ms. Argyri Panagiota, mathematician, within the framework of the action “Enhancing of skills through the creative expression of inclinations and talents” supervised and guided the A1 and A3 class students for the creation of educational material with the aim for them to participate in European and international educational competitions.

During the school year 2019-20, Ms. Argyri Panagiota, mathematician, in collaboration with Mrs. Arnaouti Eirini, English teacher, realised an action of educational material production with a group of A’ class students.
The material consists of mathematical games (Taboo board game and crossword puzzles) in the Greek and English language and it is the result of the interdisciplinary collaboration of the subjects of Mathematics and English as a Foreign Language.

The students of A2 class collaborated in the Modern Greek Literature subject under the guidance of their teacher Mrs. Karimali for the study and creation of a presentation entitled “Gender and Literature: Interpretation of Anthropological Concepts and Definitions about the Female Gender, Dowry and Family Relationships”.
The present project aimed at the familiarization of the students with a corpus of anthropological concepts and definitions about the female gender, the gender relations, the ethnographic varieties of family structures (in-law types of relationship, role distribution in the traditional and modern society, etc.) and institutions related to them (dowry), with the use of anthropological and sociological interpretation tools (comparative method, deconstruction, interpretation etc.) and examples from ethnographic societies (New Guinea, Africa).
During the lockdown, Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna and the Greek Language and Literature teacher Dr. E. Karimali organised 3 online speeches via Webex platform on issues related to History, Geopolitics and Economy during the modern historic times. The speeches were realised in the framework of the subject of Ancient History and more specifically, of the school project “Geopolitics and History: Definitions, Terms and Movements”, which was proposed and completed by Dr. E. Karimali and the A Class students during the school year 2019-20.
The first online speech took place on Friday 8 May at 10.00 with main speaker the Professor of Modern History in the Department of Political Sciences of the Aristotelean University of Thessaloniki Mr. Georgios Margaritis, in collaboration with Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna (teachers in charge Dr. Evangelia Karimali and Dr. Ioanna Pseftogianni) and the Experimental High School of Rethymnon in Crete (teacher in charge Dr. Despoina Petrougaki). In the discussion that followed participated students from all classes of both High Schools. The topic of the discussion was the important economic issues of Greece during the 19th and 20th century.
The two following speeches were about the basic principles and terms of modern Geopolitics and particularly the geopolitical affairs between Greece and Turkey.
The first speech was realised on Monday 9 June 2020 by the second-year undergraduate student of the Department of International, European and Regional Studies of Panteion University Konstantinos Melissourgos, who talked with the A’ and B’ Class students, explaining to them basic definitions of geopolitics and prepared them for Mr. K. Philis’ speech.
On Tuesday 10 June 2020 at 17.00 was realised Professor Konstantinos Philis’ speech. Mr. Philis is Executive Director of Research Projects in the Institute of International Affairs of Panteion University. His speech was entitled “Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean on a knife edge”.
The speech was attended by teachers and students of Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna. An extended discussion followed between Mr. Philis and the students, who had the chance to be informed and ask their questions about current issues that trouble the affairs of these two countries.
In the special issue 2 (2020) https://ejournals.epublishing.ekt.gr/…/openschoolsjou…/index of the European scientific journal OSJ – Open Schools Journal for Open Science our school students’ research papers were published. The corresponding research works were realised under the supervision of the mathematician Ms. Argyri Panagiota.
The students’ works were realised within the framework of the European Educational Project Open Schools for Open Societies. The students studied, registered, analysed data on the issues of the modern global community, while they also researched their impact on their local school community. In collaboration with experts and scientists, they suggested solutions and action plans for the achievement of sustainable development in the local and global community.
A project realised by B’ Class students during the school year 2018-19 was also included as it was a study on pandemics, which is especially up-to-date now, due to the difficulties the global community is facing because of Covid-19.
Last but not least, in this issue are also registered the students’ experiences from their participation in the European Student Science Parliament (July 2018), where youngsters from all over Europe participated, discussed and made decisions on one of the future challenges, the automatic vehicles.
