Our School got the 9th place in the final stage of EUSO competition

On Saturday 27/1/2018, the final stage of the Panhellenic EUSO (European Union Science Olympiad) competition took place.

This year, like the previous ones, two final competitions took place. The 40 winners of the local competitions of Southern Greece met at the National Centre of Natural Sciences in Aghioi Anargyroi, while the 26 winners of Northern Greece met at the National Centre of Natural Sciences in Thessaloniki.

Our school participated in the final competition of Southern Greece after getting the 1st place in the local competition of the National Centre of Natural Sciences in Nea Smyrni.

In total, this year 311 schools with 335 teams and 1032 students participated.

The competition was challenging. Our school team gathered 219/300 credits and took the 9th place in the final competition of Southern Greece, while the 1st team gathered just 9 credits more (228/300).

The following day, all the teams that participated in the final competition in Aghioi Anargyroi gathered in Eugenides Foundation, which hosted the closing and award ceremony of the competition. Our school team consisted of Chistos-Aggelos Konidas, Chysoula Panigyraki and Persefoni Polaki, while Petros Panigyrakis participated as a substitute member.

The school Headmaster and the Teachers congratulate the students and the teachers Aggelidou Chrysi (Chemistry teacher), Diakonou Maria (Physics teacher), Theodoridis Gerasimos (Biology teacher) and Makedonas Christodoulos (Chemistry teacher), who trained the students!

Gold medal: Congratulations to our student

The Headmaster and the teachers of our school congratulate our student of B’ Class Myrto Papadopoulou for achieving the 1st place in the International Sailing Champioship in the K17 category of girls in the framework of the International Championship 420 that took place in Perth, Australia. Distinction of our school in the local EUSO competition

On Saturday 9/12/2017, the local preliminary stage of EUSO competition (European Olympiad of Natural Sciences) was held in the National Centre of Natural Sciences in Alimos, Athens, Greece.

The EUSO competition is unique given that it combines the following characteristics:

  • It is laboratorial. Students are examined in the conduct of experimental processes and the analysis of their experimental data for the deduction of conclusions.
  • It is inter-scientific. It is a three-hour competition during which students are examined in physics, chemistry and biology.
  • It is collaborative. In contrast to other competitions, every school participates with a 3-member team.

Students need to collaborate in order to reach their goal. 7 schools participated in the local competition of Nea Smyrni municipality and our school won the first place.

Our school team consisted of the students Christos Konidas, Chrysoula Panigyraki, Persefoni Polaki and Petros Panigyrakis (a substitute member). These students belonged to and were selected from a larger group of students who got prepared for the competition.

Our school students did their practice under the guidance of our school teachers Dr. Maria Diakonou (Physics), Mr. Gerasimos Theodoridis (Biology), Dr. Chrysa Aggelidou and Dr. Christodoulos Makedonas (Chemistry).

We wish good luck to our school students and the best possible representation of Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna in the Panhellenic competition!

School Profile

Evangeliki School has a long history. It was founded in 1717 (or according to others on 1733) in Smyrna and for two hundred years it was the most important educational institution of the town. In 1922, after the war in Asia Minor, it stopped functioning and was re-founded in Nea Smyrni (New Smyrna) in 1934.

In 1971 it became a Model School, and like all other Model Schools, it was renamed first into an Experimental and then into a Model-Experimental School. Students were selected by lottery and the school teachers were highly qualified. Since 2015 it has been decided that it functions as a Model school and students are enrolled on the basis of their performance in the entry exams carried out for the selection of the students for the A’ Junior High School class. (You can watch here the school history in a digital short documentary awarded a Distinction by the Educational Radiotelevision of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs.)

Our aim in the High School is not only to offer knowledge to our students and to prepare them for the University entry exams, but mainly to properly form their characters through a close collaboration based on mutual respect and respect for the school rules.

With the belief that the school should offer students the chance to develop their skills, cultivate their talents and their research mentality, we try – as much as the current school facilities allow us – to realize projects and run afterschool clubs (open to other school students, too), where students can satisfy their desire for something more than a mere lesson.

Of course, there are things that lack and a lot has to be done. But the quality of our students, the consciousness of the school teachers, the help of the Parents and Custodians’ Association, of the D’ Directorate of Secondary Education of Athens and of Nea Smyrni Municipality give us optimism for the school future.

A member of the Youth Council “Hliahtida”, Katerina Avgerinou, student of the first class of the Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna, had the chance to accompany the President of “Iliahtida” in this very important Symposium.

They met and talked with really distinguished people during the two days spent in the European Parliament, they reflected on the mentality difference between the two countries, and unfortunately, sometimes they they did not feel comfortable at all, as they admitted.

Distinction of a student in a European Competition

The student of the “European paths in the knowledge of sciences” Club of the Model High School of the Evangeliki School of Smyrna Marianna-Fanouria Mitsioni won in the competition organized by the Green Environment Education European Network (http://greeen-eu.net), by presenting her own perspective on the problem of the climate change (http://greeen-eu.net/award-3/). The successful application and realization of the inquiry-based teaching scenario from the platform of the European Project “Inspiring Science Education” (http://www.inspiringscience.eu/) in March 2016 motivated her to take the initiative as a researcher and a young scientist to send us the message: “Save our planet. There are alternative energy sources”. The “European paths in the knowledge of sciences” opened the way for the participation of the student in the European conference in Kassel, Germany (10-12 October 2016) (http://greeen-eu.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/DRAFT_GREEEN_Final_conference_Kassel.pdf).
