Model High School “Evangeliki School of Smyrna” has a long history. It was founded by the Greek inhibitors of the city of Smyrna (Turkey) in 1717 (or as found in other sources in 1733).
The School initially had a religious orientation that lasted until 1810, when the well-known philosopher Theofilos Kairis (from Andros island) was invited to teach philosophy and mathematics. The religious orientation of the school was totally abandoned in 1828, during the direction of Avramios Omirolis. During his time, the Evangeliki School reached a perfection that is rare for an educational institute.
The School was destroyed by a fire in 1842 and opened again in1843. Prominent directors worked for its intellectual elevation and the boosting of its prestige.
It is worth mentioning that during the direction of Konstantinos Xanthopoulos (he took up in 1861), the School graduates registered in the University of Athens without entry examinations.
During the direction of G. Sotiriou, teaching improved, the ancient Greek authors were more thoroughly taught, the school programme was completed, engineering teaching was introduced, and the school was equipped with the necessary aids for the teaching of the new scientific achievements. Moreover, the Commercial School was founded, as a department of the Evangeliki School, and the 3-grade School for the studies of primary school teachers.
After the expelling of the Greek population in 1922 from the Smyrna city the School had been refounded in 1934 in the suburb of Nea Smyrni in Athens, Greece.
It is a public school and in 1971 it has been nominated as a Model School. In Greece there are only five Model Schools. The students of the school enter (from primary education) the 7th class with exams and the personnel is selected by the Greek Ministry of Education according to high level qualifications that include postgraduate studies, experience and other.
Nowadays, the Junior High School (Gymnasio) has 240 students and the High School (Lykeio) has 270 students of age 16 to 18 years old. Junior High School corresponds to 7th to 9th class and High School to 10th to 12th class. It follows the Greek Educational System and the graduates of the 12th class take the National Exam in order to enter the Greek Universities.
The School has nowadays high academic standards, fact that is proved every year by the exceptional rate of entrance of its graduates in the Greek Universities and Technical Universities.
Beyond the high academic standards the students get involved to various clubs (theater, robotics, speech and debate, chemistry, maths, astronomy etc) and other extracurricular activities. Students of the clubs often participate in contests and festivals and have brought a harvest of prizes to School.
Goal of the School is not only to prepare successful University students but also to educate moral and informed citizens that have the necessary qualities in order to contribute to the embetterment of our society.
