?On the altar of Motherland?? From Rigas Feraios to Ioannis Kapodistrias

Because of the bicentennial from the beginning of the Greek Revolution, on 22 March 2021 the action entitled ?On the altar of Motherland?? From Rigas Feraios to Ioannis Kapodistrias was presented to B3 class during the History lesson. The action started in the school year 2019-2020 and is being completed during the current school year 2020-21, with the collaboration of Mrs. Dora Menti, teaching staff in the Sector of Greek Language in the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens and Mr. Georgios Thodis, English Language and Literature teacher in Evangeliki Model High School of Smyrna.

During these school years the students involved studied the suggested texts, focusing on the space, the time, the ideology of the writer?s or the narrator?s historical period and compared texts of modern Greek and international literature that refer to Rigas and Kapodistrias, detecting similarities and differences in the presentation of the themes and the highlighting of heroism. They tried to detect social stereotypes in every kind of text but also to find out if the literary text reproduces or deters them and connected their aforementioned findings with other art works and with their everyday life experience. At the same time, they enjoyed reading the literary texts, recognized the various kinds of poetry, tried to interpret the writer’s attitude and made a critique of their content. Through these procedures they developed their empathy, placing themselves in that specific historical moment and developing in this way their historical critical thinking.
